Is it the weather, something about the long winter, perhaps, that this spring has lawnmowers sputtering and dying across Southwest Michigan?

Nope. Blame it on the gas.

Paul Stermer on Westnedge Hill in Kalamazoo said his 9-year-old mower died, mid lawn, and then the mower he borrowed from his neighbor to finish the job did the same. It was when he borrowed a third neighbor's, and that one conked out, too, that he took his questions to Facebook and learned that gasoline was the likely culprit.

Chainsaws, boat motors and other small engines are vulnerable, too, it seems.

The culprit?

Ethanol.

The only way to effectively neutralize the ethanol in gasoline is to put is a settling tank with water, the water and ethanol will mix and settle to the bottom then drain off the gasoline.

The amount of water is not critical as long as it is enough to absorb the alcohol, slosh it around a bit and leave it over night, the gasoline will be floating on top of the water the next day and there will be a sharp stratification between the two. Use a transparent container and it is easy to drain off the water from the bottom or syphon off the gas from the top.

“[S]witch to a premium gas!”

That will NOT help. Premium gas is higher octane but it still contains ethanol at most stations. If premium is E-free then, by all means, use it.

The general public is still dumb about the problems with ethanol but I doubt that many GB members were surprised by this article. Ethanol-free gas is available in more areas than most folks realize. It is usually higher priced than E10 but not usually as much higher as in this article. I have five vehicles and ten small engines; none have ever been contaminated with ethanol.

It is ethanol and everything it was supposed to make better has come to be worse. Everything.

Not only does gas cost more because of it, it has less kick and you get fewer mpg because of it.

It does not make a smaller carbon foot print and in fact, makes a bigger one.

As for the environment? More land has been cleared to plant corn and more land has had the weed killer sprayed upon it as it also has had chemical fertilizers cast upon it and genetically modified corn grown on it.

The list continues.

Who is going to vote against any politician that supports or supported it?

I'll donate my hard earned money to those who will fight to get rid of it.

Poor maintenance by the owners who are too lazy to remove the gas from their lawn mowers at the end of the mowing season. All the makers advise removal of gasoline from the tank and also running the engine until it conks out to get all the gas out of the carb.

Are there additives to reduce the ethanol effects? Do they work?

I've not had any problems yet. Ethanol is not anything new in our area. It's been all that is available for probably 10 years.

Is this something new in some areas? Michigan?

Times are changing, folks... It used to be your lawn mower ain't starting, you took that thing apart and left it in a state of disarray, there was no bringing it back to life and so it was time to buy another one. Nowadays...

"It was when he borrowed a third neighbor's, and that one conked out, too, that he took his questions to Facebook and learned that gasoline was the likely culprit."
