Ford is doling out some extra gas money to almost 200,000 of its hybrid customers, because the vehicles aren’t quite as efficient as the company promised.

But the mea culpa casts a harsh light on how mileage is tested in hybrids, which is a far more complicated and controversial process than efficiency tests on gasoline engines.

Even the more conservative mileage ratings trotted out by Ford this morning will be hard to maintain. Go grab an entry-level Fiesta and see if you get 43 miles to a gallon on the highway, let alone 45, the old claim.

To be fair, all mileage measuring is an imperfect science. Engineers just pull the car onto a kind of massive treadmill and hook a tube up to the tailpipe. As the vehicle “drives” it over a simulated “course” with a set pattern of acceleration and

I just want to see more options for everyone to buy what fits their needs. I don't care what the option is, just give us options.

Ford has been caught and are paying up to hold off lawsuits. Probably better this way for all parties.

Without sunshine they would not be paying out. Amazing what truth does.

Let's have more of that.

"again, another mark against the hybrid vehicles, not the mention the price of fixing and replacing parts once its no longer under warranty, and to test a hybrid on a computer, cost way more than a regular gasoline engine, no wonder people arent jumping to get the new hybrids as much as automakers would like to see, and the price range for these vehicles, are way more then a regular gas engine... go figure... "

There is not one true statement anywhere in that comment.

Hybrids still get better gas mileage than a regular gasoline engine, especially in city driving. I earned back the extra money I paid to buy my Prius years ago.

They should do these measurements on an actual road instead of using a dyno.

"... Aren't Nearly as Efficient as We Were Told..." by none other than Ford and its equivalent.

Even if it wasn't the auto industry that provided us with that information, where has Ford been and why have they not "fessed up" until now?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Quoting the article: "To be fair, all mileage measuring is an imperfect science."

Actually, it is not imperfect. Instead, it is pretty accurate calculation. It should not be used as the basis for what you and I will get as far as MPG because that is dependent upon several key factors. Instead, it should simply be used as a way to compare fuel efficiency between two different vehicles.
