Back when gasoline was 30 cents a gallon, a visit to the service station meant just that — service. Pull into the station, drive over the rubber hose that makes the bell ring, and wait for the attendant to come striding out. Regular or ethyl? Check the oil and tires? Washing the windshield didn't even require asking. But those quaint concepts suddenly took a turn toward oblivion 50 years ago at the Big Top convenience store in Westminster.

On June 10, 1964, at the corner of Federal Boulevard and 74th Avenue, the switch was flipped on the nation's first remote-controlled self-service gas pumps. Gasoline retailing was never the same.

Some motorists were appalled at the prospect of pumping their own.

Big Top owner John Roscoe, however, found that he could draw customers to the radica

Self service gas began 50 years ago in Westminster. When gasoline was 30 cents/gallon (25 cents/gallon for me and that was expensive at Shell), a visit to the service station meant service. Pull into the station, drive over the rubber hose that makes the bell ding and wait for the attendant or two to come out. Regular or Ethyl? Check the oil, check the tires with the (free) air hose, and wash the windshield. *Cash only, NO credit cards. *S&H Green stamps for things at the S&H Green Stamp store. *Safeway had Gold Bond stamps. Independant gas stations had Free glasses or steak knives with an 8 gallon fill up. *Fred Meyer had their own stamps the first few years (Not for gas but for merchandise), still have some of those stamps around someplace. Some stations had fuel filler cards that were stamped or punched out with each fill up.
>>>Except in New Jersey and Oregon, backward states that can't change DOT's way of thinking. *Sigh!*
**You had to get 20 gallons of gasoline at $5.00 or less and be back there in three days for more fuel. Gas hogs, polluting and extra large 1 1/2 ton vehicles that may not be allowed back on the roads and highways nowadays. **Now where is that fuel filler cap? Right side, Left side, Behind the license plate, turn the rear turn signal lens housing sideways, ehh, Ahhhh!
The gas stations were very different then and sometimes the gas station attendants today are indifferent towards the customers.
**Putz!! bwaaa ha ha ha !...
Drive vehicles with high mpg, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

LMAO... those would be the ones that would want it !!!!
Just look around at Wal-Mart... see who's riding in the motorized carts.
Watch who's parking in the Handicapped parking....

It's not just the fat ones though....It's the lazy ones too.

self-serv has its place, but it would still be nice to have an option. Esp for older drivers or those who are mobility impaired (not talking about those too fat to roll out of their seats, but those who have suffered injuries, such as veterans).
Even though they should be able to receive help, I see lots of places where it's more painful to get assistance than pull teeth w/out narcotics.

Just found out a Man I worked for many, many, many years ago at a service station full serve/self serve is still alive. I put the internet to work and found out where he lived and his phone number....OMG he's almost a hundred years old...I guess getting oil on you is not as hazardous as some say....

I called him... unfortunately he can't hardly hear so I wrote him a letter along with some pictures from the old station. One was of he and I waiting on a full service customer.

And for the few that'll remark "Gas prices"

Then it was around 50 cents a gallon....today in Marana it was $3.21, Tucson $3.22, and Phoenix it was $3.35

Cheapest Diesel (verified) $3.55 ..Casa Grande

So there !!!!! (and that's not full service)

two states still have laws that DO NOT allow customers to pump their own (mostly ignored). Some stations offer DISCOUNTS at the SELF SERVE island over the FULL SERVE (with attendant).

Full service would not work these days....The younger generation is allergic to manual labor. Besides the gas stations wouldn't want to pay wages, they would want you to live off tips.
In order to speak to the attendant you would have to learn Spanish or worse Iranian/Iraqi...

Hard to believe it's only been 50 years since self-serve! When I first drove West from New York in 1973, all service stations were staffed by attendants
-- up until I crossed the Mississippi River. Thereafter, most were self-service, so I had to learn to pump my own gasoline -- quick! Apart from a trip into Oregon some years ago, I have not used a full-service station -- well, for about 40 years.

I remember back in the early 70's in people continued to use full service stations because they just couldn't deal with handling that smelly old hose nozzle. Hard to believe now a days.
