General Motors' new 'Belt Assurance System' safety feature will practically enforce fastening your seat belts before driving off by not allowing shifting from 'park' to 'drive' until the driver and front passenger seat belts are buckled up.

Doesn't it sound pretty similar to what the U.S. Government mandated back in 1974? If your memory serves you well, American drivers revolted in frustration and the development of the then groundbreaking seat belt starter interlock feature was scrapped altogether.

Not intimidated by the lessons history teaches us, the Detroit manufacturer wants to have a go at bringing this idea back by offering the 'Belt Assurance System' as a free option on a limited number of models. These will be the 2015 model year Chevrolet Cruze, Colorado, Silverado and the GM

99% of the time, I'm the only one in my car. I buckle even if I'm doing small maneuvers in my driveway, but to force me to buckle the passenger side because I have groceries sitting in that seat is ridiculous to say the least.

I buckle up all the time, but not for merely straightening my car out in a parking space or other such small movements. This was bad in '74 and it's bad now, so I don't see this becoming popular; after all, who wants to be forced to wear a seat belt just to drive the car under a shade tree in the back yard to change the spark plugs?

So you are trying to go to work solo. The car thinks someone is in the passenger seat, even though there is no one there. This malfunction won't let you put it in drive, and you are late to work.

I have this problem with my G6 now, but it doesn't stop me from driving. It only messes with the passenger side airbag.

No, I do not want this option, and it better not become mandatory like TPMS and backup camera's.

What about a large box or animal in the passenger seat that the belt won't fit around?

Will it go into reverse? Sometimes I take the belt off and open the door to get a better view when backing than I can get looking out the window.

I remember 1974.

Back then, buckling up was merely a good idea, and there were many people who would argue that – usually with a story of someone who lived because they were thrown out of a car. My dad had a story along those lines.

Nowadays...most states not only ticket you for not buckling up, but they'll ticket the driver for having PASSENGERS unbuckled. Nowadays it almost makes sense to have a car insure that everyone inside is buckled up before moving.

But...it's General Motors. Even a GM brat like me knows what THAT means....

It's a free option. Option means you only get it if you want it. The headline is misleading, making it sound as if it's going to be forced on you, and too many commenters are buying right into it, without even reading the snippet here.

I always fasten my seat belt, and if I still had underage kids who would be learning to drive one day, this'd be great to have to help the kids remember to get the right habit as they learn to drive. There's perfectly good reasons like that why someone might choose to add the option, and for anyone who doesn't like it, DON'T GET IT!
