If your "check engine" light could talk, it might want to hurl obscenities at you for ignoring it when it's only trying to help you out

Code readers are fairly cheap. If your light goes on, use one.

Maybe if they changed to a recording of Clint Eastwood saying, "Do you feel lucky punk, well, do you?"

A check engine light has different meanings from car to car. Need some standardization.

I have had the 'check engine' light come on 3 times...twice, no reason other than computer malfunction, the third time was because my daughter didn't replace the gas tank cap with enough turns. With this history, makes you want to ignore the light until it is convenient to get it checked rather than immediately pulling off the road in the next town.

Usually the check engine light is something minor, but you can't be sure.

Too bad they didn't include the most common item after loose gas caps, a short in the wiring to one of the other systems. Many times when a system sends a code to the computer it is due to a bad connection, usually due to leads making intermittent contact at some plug in where water can get in the works. Most shops just replace the item and then when it comes back, with the new item installed, have to track down the connection issue. I'm betting that many perfectly good parts end up going to rebuilders.

When mine came on due a small vacuum leak, it also disabled the cruise-control, electronic stability control and a couple of other things and lit up the dashboard like a Christmas tree. Pretty hard to ignore, but repair under warranty took less than an hour.

I think more people would not ignore it if it didn't come on for dumb items such as a gas cap (yes I realize that is part of the emission system) or it gave you some additional information about what was wrong instead having to go get the codes read.

Tightening my gas cap usually works for me. My mechanic keeps me posted on all other things every time I change oil (3000 miles).

You're "klling" your car by not tightening your gas cap or replacing your battery? That's a bit extreme.
