Mayor Ed Lee on Wednesday proposed raiding $19.5 million that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors set aside to fund a renewable energy program, his administration saying the money could be better spent on additional streetlights and subsidies for solar panels on homes and businesses.

Lee's surprise move appears designed to gut funding for a program he has long opposed, despite a veto-proof majority of the board in support of it. Supervisors who support the program, CleanPowerSF, were immediately angered.

It makes sense to pivot if the current program isn't working, but this mayor is trying to do it single-handedly instead of getting the council and the voters on board first. Now, I'm not an expert in operating through politics by any stretch of the imagination, but even I know this is no way to win friends in government. Time for him to take a step back, breathe, mend fences, and see after that what can be salvaged.

No surprise. Politicians are always raiding "dedicated funds" for their pet political projects--and constituencies. Like the Highway Trust fund(s).

Lee is the sort of imbecile who, having raided a fund, would publicly wonder why so many of the peasants don't trust govt.

Which power company is giving the kickback to which politician? It's the taxpayers who were overcharged it should be their choice. Have something on the next ballot to decide where the money goes

Why give up?
Why take the easy way?
Money could be better spent if there is not some corrupt dead beat running the program!
