Ford Motor could exceed its commitment to hire 12,000 people by the end of 2015.

"There is a high probability we will surpass that number," Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, said in an interview.

Hinrichs is at Ford's retooled Kansas City plant, at Claycomo, Mo., today where almost 5,000 employees have started assembly of the 2015 Ford Transit that is being built and sold in the U.S. for the first time. The workforce includes an additional 2,000 employees, most of them new hires, to add a third crew to the plant.

Ford has invested $1.1 billion to add production of the full-size commercial van now and to prepare for production of the 2015 F-150 full-size pickup next year.

More jobs are good for the economy. Oh, and without government help. That is the way it should be.

This looks a lot like the Mercedes Benz Sprinter and the Fiat-bases Ram ProMaster vans. Ford's timing is good since a lot of small businesses use these for work and delivery purposes and they should do well with it as the economy continues to recover and more businesses need to replace their pre-recession vehicles.

We're on the verge of a new trend in the auto industry where employee inventives are based on quality versus sales. GM is heading that way. If it works then others will surely follow.

So the good people of Avon Ohio couldn't build the Transport? They can only build the E series.

I grew up in England, and everyone there at one time or another has ridden in a Transit van or driven one or both.

Great to see this finally happening. The European design gives owners far more cargo capacity than any E series ever could.

Ford is ahead of GM here. Again.
