There’s a compelling safety argument to be made for run-flat tires: Blow a tire on a highway on a cold, rainy night and, instead of digging out the spare tire and jacking up the car to replace the flat – or waiting for roadside service with cars and big rigs steaming by – run flats allow you to keep driving

But there have also been justified driver complaints about run-flat tires: they’re expensive, rough-riding, have a shorter life span and are not as “fun to drive” as regular tires. Bridgestone addressed these criticisms at the launch of its DriveGuard line of tires, the first run-flat tires without an original equipment fitment

Many companies make run-flat tires, including Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, Kumho and Pirelli. Bridgestone says it was the first to use them on a production

I'll stay with regular tires and pass on the $300 spoiler, too.

people would rather spend $300 on a fancy wing for the back of their car than run flat tires. Go figure.

How about making tires that resist getting flats?

Sounds safer, but still not a replacement for everyday driving.

The 80 kilometer distance at 80 kilometers per hour max speed figures in the article means, in terms of US measurement terms, that the new Bridgestone run-flat tire will go 50 miles distance at 50 miles per hour before one starts to degrade the flat tire to the point that it may not be repairable. For those who cannot change a flat tire on the side of the road such as the handicapped or pregnant women or the very old, this is a very good product that hopefully will allow then to reach assistance to get their spare tire mounted in place of the flat tire.

When combined with a tire pressure monitoring system that notifies the driver that they have an air pressure problem with a tire, these new Bridgestone run-flat tires seem to be a very good idea especially when their projected cost is comparable to other good quality tires on the market. Our children would have gone off to college with a set of these tires had then been available at the time.

This sounds useful - and my regular tires are already expensive and rough-riding, so no great loss to make the switch.

If you hardly ever get blowouts, then is it really worth it to spend that amount of money on a tire.

Many, if not all, are more fragile and thus subject to damage from minor things that would not cause normal tires to go down. I've heard of people cracking rims turning off a street without hitting a curb.
