CSX train carrying crude oil derailed and burst into flames in downtown Lynchburg, VA on Wed, spilling oil into the James R and forcing hundreds to evacuate

In its 2nd oil-train accident this year, CSX said 15 cars on a train travelling from Chicago to VA derailed at 2:30PM. Photos and video showed high flames and a large plume of black smoke. Officials said there were no injuries, but 300-350 people were evacuated in a 1/2-mi

City officials instructed motorists and pedestrians to stay away from downtown, while firefighters battled the blaze. Three railcars were still on fire as of 4PM

The fiery derailment a short distance from office buildings in the city of 77,000 was sure to bring more calls from environmentalists and activists for stricter regulations of the burgeoning business of s

We humans are not very good caretakers of earth, are we? And the heavy rain just after the accident spread the spilled oil more than it should have.

It is obvious to one and all that the US needs more pipeline capacity to transport the significantly increased production of crude oil and natural gas in both the US and Canada. Existing pipeline capacity needs expanding and new pipelines need to be built to move the increased crude oil and natural gas production to our existing refineries or to the retail market in the case of natural gas. Not only are pipelines the cheapest transportation mode for crude oil they are also the safest both for living creatures and the environment.

If you do not want the vastly increased crude oil production rolling through your community in tank cars, let your elected state and national representatives know that you would like to see expedited expansion of existing pipeline capacity and new pipeline construction permitting. It would also make sense to require that all bulk hazardous liquid commodities be transported by pipeline when possible and feasible as opposed to transport by rail or by water.

I've seen downtown Lynchburg - the rail lines are right next to the river, probably because when they were built that's where all the commerce and industry were, and terrain-wise it was easiest to build there. But if they're going to have lots of hazmat shipments like this, they need a rail bypass now.

Sounds like another angry liberal! LOL!

Yes, pipelines are safer both in human life and environmentally. And that's what the so called environmentalists want right?

Keep it safe!

bar1035, pipelines frequently leak, split open, and the oil sometimes catches fire. They need to be made better, too.

Either it's the oil Sloshing around in the tank cars caused from sudden accelerations and/or decelerations derailing them or it's Eco-terrorism.

Transporting crude by rail is clearly riskier than by pipeline for any given volume.
