WASHINGTON — When it comes to energy, more Americans are concerned about protecting their pocketbooks than the environment.

At least, that’s one of the findings of the latest iteration of the University of Texas energy poll, a survey conducted March 3-17 among 2,133 U.S. adults, with results released Wednesday morning.

When respondents were asked to rate how concerned they were about a variety of energy issues, 84 percent said they were worried about gasoline costs and 78 percent said they were concerned about electricity costs

In their book A climate for change:global warming facts for faith-based decisions, published in 2009,Katharine Hayhoe and Andrew Farley predicted that the Climate disruption was going to result in a major drought in California because the conditions that bring snow to the mountains was changing.

Look at California Now! Hayhoe is soft pedaling it now because there is also an El Nino involved, but what is happening is exactly what she predicted.

Good Grief! So many fools still in denial. :(

Personaly, I think that Buickdriver's comments are foolish!

Greens are often enough NOT Richer than anyone else.

Why do any of you Know that there have been all these temperature shifts in the past? Because scientists have told you so! And the science community is also telling you that this time the climate shift is happening MUCH FASTER than in those prevoius "natural" climate shift events.

Most of those past climate change events, that Buickdriver so casualy mentions, resulted in MASS extinctions and the case is being made we are entering another round of mass extinctions, because the changes have already begun.

Cosmic radiation? Really?

I think that Solar radiation was at a peak in 1998 and might have contributed to that years warmth, but solar radiantion is at a minimum level now so why has the last decade ben so so much warmer than prevouis decades?

Excellent comment Buickdriver7 and you are 100% correct.

Anyone who lives in the real world, as opposed to the fantasy land apparently occupied by the environmental activist and Hollywood celebrities, primary GREEN concern is with the Green in the Benjamins they must have to support themselves and their families. Only when the Benjamin outlay is the same or nearly the same between two or more comparative items people have or need to buy do real world people give any consideration to which item has a better environmental impact.

Surveys can be skewed according to how the questions are asked. for example are you more worried about the environment or fuel prices. Vs asking what are your top 3 concerns then adding the number of people listed which 3 & what order. Doesn't really mean they are more worried about their wallet than the environment, but what is more pressing at the moment. Also many have been turned against environmental concerns due to excessive exaggeration by some groups. people start thinking all the concerns are Chicken Little with the sky is falling or crying Wolf too often.

The environmental issues don't matter much when your'e trying to keep a roof over your head and barely make enough to feed your family. It's only those people who have a good job and are financially secure (or have someone taking care of all that for them) that can take the time to ponder and act on environmental issues, appear at marches, get involved in local political issues, etc.

This should not be a surprise to anyone who lives in the real world.

So the tree-huggers must be the richest people in North America! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Human activity as the basis for global warming is a myth.
It's caused by variations in cosmic/solar radiation reaching the Earth.
Proof of this is that global warming and cooling has previously-occurred, long before there were enough humans to make a difference!!

I agree. Build the pipeline already. And tell Obama to stop the war on coal.

The proportion, 78%, concerned about the environment is still significant. Higher than 10 years ago, I bet.

Current greed always outweighs concern for future generations. Me, me, me. But I guess I'm just the average bear. [insert eye roll here]

Anybody in politics knows this. Phoney global warming / climate change BS is last on the list because most of us are smarter than the average bear.

Not at all surprising, but realistically few Americans fully understand the technical issues involved in energy production or the potential economic and environmental impacts of the various options.
