A small airplane heading back to South Dakota after a Texas cattle sale crashed into a wind farm in foggy weather, killing the pilot and three passengers.

The wreckage was found Monday at the South Dakota Wind Energy Center, a site south of Highmore with 27 turbines that are about 213 feet tall, plus the length of the blade.

Steve Stengel, a spokesman with Florida-based NextEra Energy Inc., said there was damage to a turbine but he couldn't say what part of the tower was hit.

The pilot was either not capable of flying instruments or was trying to "scud run" below low stratus clouds --- two things that have proven deadly many times over the years.

Did you know that wind turbines disrupt navigational radar imaging? (and weather radar) You'll never see wind turbines anywhere near a military base or an airport.

I wonder if the location of the wind farms is marked on pilots' navigation charts-?

Sadly, birds and bats have access to no such information. They die in wind farms all the time. My condolences to the friends and loved ones of the people who died in this crash.

Sadly this is human error, not wind farm error.

But this could be a growing problem.

Prayers out to the families and friends of the deceased.

The towers are lighted. You can't see lights in fog. That's why it's called fog

Radio towers over 110 feet are required to light beacons so don't we see them on wind turbines? The blade tips should have them for aircraft safety.

The pilot should probably be flying higher than 300 feet off of the ground!

All towers are supposed to be equipped with lights! How do these wind mills get away without them? Chalk up a kill for Green Energy!

Did the wind draft pull the plane into the blades?

The plane's propeller against the windmill's blades....

Somebody shouldn't have been flying in the fog, and idiots will blame the windfarm for killing the people in the plane.

the height of the tower plus the max radius of the turbine puts the altitude of the plane at less than 300', which is ridiculously low. The plane was probably down that low trying to stay out of the clouds . . . it's called scud running, which is always dangerous.

That big blue 27 in the bottom right corner means the lowest you should dare fly in that area is 2700' above sea level. Go below that and you run the risk of hitting something, like those towers on the chart. But go ahead and blame the wind farm if you must. That's like blaming the gun instead of the shooter.

Don't expect this to make the MainStream news. Or the fact that these things kill numerous birds, bats, eagles, California condors, and more.
