Energy concerns are a major topic today — indirectly, in discussions of the 2 degree Celsius climate change deadline and issue with Russia, as well as directly, such as with the delay on a Keystone XL pipeline decision. But there is one subject in the energy industry that isn’t changing despite the emphasis on natural gas — and that’s coal. As Consul Energy President Nick Deluliis told The Wall Street Journal, “Coal’s future is strong; it’s just not a growth story.” Of course, some would be less conservative in their projections on coal’s role in the future, but let’s take a look a few signs that show this much, at least, is true.

1. Bloomberg vs. Boehner
2. Clean Coal and International Industries
3. Energy Outlook

This was an interesting and informative news article, but I'm not very informed about coal in general. How abundant is coal right now, for example? Also, could coal be refined into motor fuels and in this way liberate other energy sources that are inherently cleaner for powering utilities..?

As long as coal remains cheap and our energy needs are not dropping, coal will be around for a while as one of our major fuel inputs.

We really don't have the luxury of shutting down what currently works. At least not until we have working plants to replace them.

We will either use it ourselves here in the US or export it to other countries that still want to keep their electric prices reasonable. Either way it will continue to be used somewhere in the world for decades.

Much to the dismay of environmentalists everywhere.

And "clean coal" is not clean in the sense of being environmentally friendly. Coal will never be either clean or safe!

Wind and solar are not affordable. NG prices are not stable and will rise as exports increase and more industries use it.

Coal is good.

One mistake with nuclear and the ground you walk on won't be safe for 1,000 years.

Coal and nuclear energy need to be part of the energy solution; they are more reliable than wind power.

Coal is dirty, but can be cleaned and used cleanly. Doesn't kill many birds either except maybe the occasional canary.
