Ford (NYSE:F) will debut a concept vehicle that taps into solar charging next week at the Consumer Electronics Show, according to CNN Money. The innovation was made possible thanks to a roof covered with solar cells provided by SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR). For investors in the solar and electric vehicle spaces, it's well known that the connection between the two macro developments is basically inseparable -- no wonder Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA ) CEO Elon Musk is also the CEO of SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY ) . But such an early move to solar-powered cars is somewhat of a surprise.

Will you have to park the car in the sun instead of your garage to charge the vehicle?

Since this is a hybrid, it'll simply run like a conventional hybrid once the electric-only range is depleted - still quite efficient *and* doesn't leave you stranded *and* you don't have to have your own garage to charge it. What I would like to see are high-efficiency solar panels that don't need to take up the whole roof, so there can be a sunroof - very valuable for venting heat on hot days until the A/C fully kicks in.

danindenver - I believe TWy means "terawatt-years" - i.e., a whole heck of a lot of kilowatt-hours.

djgunrunner - I think most of us work where we park our cars in open-air lots, so we have all day to wait.

Hell No. They haven't ironed out all the problems with electric cars (see article regarding the ec and cold weather). Imagine a huge solar panel on top of your car? Please... Let's work on one thing at a a time.

It will take a lot of concentrated cells to build up the Ampres required to run a car. They might be able to assist is charging the battery if you have a long enough time to wait.

I remember, in the olden days of journalism, when an article, containing an abbreviation, would provide a translation of same for the lay person who may not be familiar with the peculiar jargon of the subject matter.

But, no more.

Does anyone know what TWy means? Cause Merriam-Webster and Google don't know.

Eventually, but not soon. The technology is far from there for a consumer vehicle.
