NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If you're a novice driver, dialing a phone is more dangerous than retrieving text messages, and reaching for an object while driving is more likely to produce an accident than eating behind the wheel.

Even experienced drivers face a dangerously-high risk of getting into an accident while manipulating a cell phone.

Those are some of the findings from a newly-released study that monitored 151 licensed U.S. drivers - 42 novices and 109 experienced drivers - to log what they were doing just before an accident or a near-miss.

It took me a while after learining to drive to get up the confidence to have the radio on when I was at the wheel. Would that all beginning drivers have a concept of their inherent limitations.

Also, if something drops, then down it goes. I know it'll be on he floor somewhere when I have a chance to look.

And yes, there is a need for research to confirm and quantify (and sometimes dispel) our notions of "common sense."

I still see more ADULTS texting and talking on their cell phone than novice drivers which are usually teens.

My biggest distraction as a novice driver was looking in the rear view mirror trying to figure out how much oil my Vega was burning.

The news in this is that apparently there are people who didn't realize this.

Everything is a bigger problem for novice drivers. That's why they call them novice drivers.
