Ford to unveil solar hybrid concept car at CES that gets 100 miles per gallon

Ford plans to unveil at this month's International CES gadget show a solar-powered concept car that offers the same performance as a plug-in hybrid but without the need for a plug.

The C-MAX Solar Energi Concept car uses a gasoline engine combined with a gizmo that acts like a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun's rays on the vehicle's roof-mounted solar panels. The automaker says the vehicle's estimated combined city-highway mileage is 100 mpg.

Ford says that by using solar power instead of an electric plug, a typical owner will reduce their annual greenhouse gas emissions by four metric tons.

The company says it sold about 85,000 hybrid or electric vehicles in 2013, including 6,300 units of its C-MAX

If any car maker has a car that will get 100 miles per gallon, They will be in other Countries.
You know this Government will never allow us to have this.

Solar charging will make a nice addition to the C-Max fleet!

We own a C-Max Energi and it works very well - 25 miles on a full charge in summer, though down to the advertised 21 miles per charge in winter.

Cost of electricity here in southwestern Virginia means those 21-25 miles are at 1/3 the cost of gasoline - i.e. cheap!

Good - if they didn't uncover it the sun would never hit the roof mounted solar panels!

Nice =) Might be a bit of a problem charging solar with cars parked in garages though.

Dazzling idea!

Let the sun shine brilliantly and let the sunshine in.

The future so sunshinely bright, gonna, gotta wear sunshades.

Cool concept. Would seem to be better suited to sunny markets.

That's the way to go! No plug-in. Charge while you go. Unlimited range. Just don't drive it at night time or on an overly cloudy day!

As a hybrid with a gas engine for backup, it certainly would be more practical than a pure solar electric but doubt that it would achieve the advertised level of efficiency during the shorter days of winter or in areas where cloudy days are more prevalent.

As long as you have Sun...might as well use it. Would not work well in Seattle.

Glad to see Ford developing this concept.
I wonder how much it increases the driving
distance on a sunny day.

I believe Toyota did this years ago and still does with its Prius. Not sure how much energy it can collect and use, but anything is helpful. Maybe the concentration builds up enough to keep the car going.

While I like the idea and wish Ford the best, the "A full day of sunshine is equivalent to a four-hour battery charge" I find troubling. This may work in Florida and the Southwest, but the rest of the nation does not benefit from a full day of sunshine all that often.

Interesting, with the gas engine range issues are negated.
