Oil prices started the new year Thursday with a gain amid hopes for stronger demand following a 7 percent surge in 2013.

Benchmark oil added 28 cents to $98.70 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Hopes for the solid demand in coming months are pegged to the signs of a recovery in the U.S., which is expected to help revive other major global economies.

Brent crude, a benchmark used to price international crudes used by many U.S. refiners, added 28 cents to $111.08.

In other energy futures trading:

โ€” Natural gas futures were little changed at $4.24 per thousand cubic feet.

โ€” Heating oil was also little changed at $3.07 a gallon.

โ€” Wholesale gasoline was unchanged at $2.79 a gallon.

That is all the better excuse the speculators can come up with is the old, worn out "demand hopes" excuse? How long have they been claiming "signs of a recovery" in the US? They must be using the cooked government figures. How about looking at the records numbers on foodstamps and reduced work hours / layoffs due to Obamacare.

So Big Oil raised the price of oil (and ultimately gas) because they think we're all doing so much better financially that we can afford to give them more money. They must be watchign a different US Economy than the one I find myself working in.

Now we are raising prices on a HOPE DEMAND INCREASES. This is just ridiculous.

If we hope demand goes down do we get a price reduction ????

Excellent point about simply hoping for a stronger economy will cause prices to rise. Fear is another term that will cause prices to rise, such as fear of unrest in any oil producing country. Nothing has to actually happen. If the hope or fear is realized, then it goes up even more.
