WASHINGTON — The United States and other nations face many challenges and opportunities in the Arctic, a frozen frontier where melting ice is creating new shipping lanes, opening up access to massive oil, gas and mineral deposits, threatening coastal villages and posing possible future security threats.

Key questions and answers about stepped-up activity on the tip-top of the Earth:

Q: Why is the Arctic a key new international interest?

A: Countries around the world increasingly are looking to the Arctic for new shipping lanes created by the melting ice and as a source of natural resources. The U.S. Geological Survey says the region contains 30 percent of the world's undiscovered natural gas and 15 percent of its oil. Temperatures are rising, sea ice is melting, some shoreline communiti

The proof that the earth has been colder and hotter over the centuries is well documented. It has all happened without any of it caused by man. Whether man is here or not, it will continue to happen.

and climate change predicted there would be more extremes. Both hot and cold extremes.

But don't worry, by the time there's real proof I'll probably won't be alive, so you can have the title of having won the argument.

For those that believe weather and climate is the same thing, and confuse North America with the whole world, I submit the following food for thought!

"Blistering heat that formed over the Nullarbor at the end of December and continues over parts of inland Australia smashed temperature records and was a "highly significant" event, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
In a special climate statement released late on Monday, the bureau said the latest heatwave, while less extensive and prolonged than the record-breaking hot spell to start 2013, was still a remarkable event.
The report comes just days after the bureau confirmed that last year was Australia’s hottest in more than a century of records, easily beating 2005.

For education and edification, Australian temperatures are in Celsius. 50 degrees is over 120 degrees on the old Fahrenheit scale.

'Highly significant' heatwave smashes Australian records

honda's post says it all about those who still believe in global warming during the coldest winter in decades.

No, you try again. The global warming wackos cannot agree on any of it. Even many former global warming fanatics have accepted that the earth has not been warming for the past 15 years or so. Most say it is cooling which is why they have switched to calling it "climate change" now instead of "global warming." Either way, none of it is caused by man. This planet has warmed and cooled countless times throughout history. For example, Viking farms in Greenland are under permafrost which means it was much warmer there 1000 years ago than it is today. This winter in North America is the coldest on record. So go peddle your spin on someone who votes for idiots on the left.

That is not exactly cooling.....

And many of the posters have trouble comprehending which pole is which.... let alone the differences....BTW, alaydown congrats on nearing your million point

It does not matter whether we are warming or cooling. The fact is that the earth has warmed and cooled countless times since it began without any help from man. In the 70s, these same global warming fanatic scientists of today predicted we were headed for another ice age. Most of them today have accepted the fact that the earth is cooling again, so they call it climate change. There are those global warming scientists who are trapped in the Arctic ice while trying to prove the ice is melting. There is still no evidence or accepted position that shows man is causing any of it today since the earth continues to warm or cool as it has over the many centuries before man developed any technology today that might somehow affect any alleged climate change.

Are we warming or cooling ? Seems many of the experts have differing opinions. Kinda like the life creation debate ;) Just keeps going back and forth and probably will continue to do so.

The one with Santa is still in a warming period.... with the sixth-warmest season on record..... right after a record-breaking warm year (2012)..

"And while everyone here argues about whether the sea ice is melting or increasing and where, practically all of the glaciers in Greenland are sliding into the North Atlantic. Time to wake up, people. Climate change isn't going to fix itself."

We won't/can't fix it either. The sun, the climate and the weather are going to do whatever they do no matter how much we spend or change our technology. To believe that man has any control over this is the height of human centered conceit. There are things you just can't do anything about. Learn it, live it, love it.

I am sure that those people down at Antarctica were non-plussed when their ice breaker was not able to break ice and I think the Polar Bears up in Alaska are every day more and more confused as to where the ice cap they had is going. So the South Pole is having a "bit of weather" as my English pal calls it with the ice cap which had been decaying, now coming back. Let's see what happens next and I am sure it will be more of the weird weather patterns we HAVE been seeing already. The fact is that the ocean is sort of re-distributing the warms and the colds. Notice that the most densely populated parts of the world are where the weather is the wildest which probably has something to do with that "ole debil" global warming at the helm.
