The derailment of a train carrying oil in North Dakota on Monday, and the subsequent evacuations caused by its explosion, could draw more regulatory scrutiny to rail shipments of crude. But the soaring use of trains to move oil is a long-term trend that is not likely to change soon, analysts say.

The incident “will continue discussion of safety issues surrounding train transport of crude oil,” investment banking firm Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. said in a note to investors on Tuesday. The derailment “could pressure the permitting processes currently ongoing for rail facilities” on the west coast, the note said.

But the trend of heavy rail use for moving oil is here to stay, the firm said.

There are risks in rail and pipelines. Emergency plans must be in place and companies need to act immediately of one arises.

They should have built more pipelines. Rail is too dangerous.

I agree for the short term (5-10 years) unless the Keystone XL ia built to connect both Canadian oil and the Balken Shale oil to refineries about the country.

Its in everyone's best interest, including the Oil Companies, to ship it safely. Nobody wins when there are oil transport accidents.

No matter how the oil is shipped, prices will get as low as they should or could. Part of that reason is increased taxes at the state level.
