SAGINAW, MI — With winter weather now upon us, the Michigan State Police Third District Headquarters is reminding motorists to be aware of several factors during winter driving.

Motorist are asked to remember to do all braking before a turn is made and take proper line of travel through the turn to reduce the potential of a skid to occur.

If your car begins to skid, let off the throttle and brakes and use quick hand over hand steering technique to turn the front tires in the direction you want to go, officials say.

Said Lt. Brian Cole. “The most important factor to remember is the handling capability of your car is drastically reduced in winter weather, so it is best to use a slower speed to compensate for decreased handling.”

That's smart always turn in the direction you want to go. Another great tip always assume every wet spot you're approaching is ice.

Dangerous if you don't observe some basics, but fun if you get to test the traction limits in a safe area. One particular back parking area at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno comes to mind. Can't get that kind of practice down here near the Bay. Be safe this winter.

My first driving in winter was that of a young teen with my dad in a shopping center parking lot at night after the stores closed. Even a police car stopped to check us out and applauded us for learning the pitfalls of everyday life in the Great White North.
