The fighter jets and military planes that blast into the skies each day above Albuquerque’s Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) consume millions of gallons of jet fuel each year. In order to serve this fleet, the Air Force stores enormous amounts of fuel and distributes it throughout the base via a network of tanks, pipes and pumps. In the early 1950s, the base replaced leaking tanks and aging pipelines with a new fuels facility it promised would modernize and make more safe the handling and distribution of jet fuel. The facility received its first trainload of jet fuel and aviation gas in 1953. Almost immediately, and for the next 45 years, it has leaked jet fuel into the surrounding soil.

One more faction of the toxic legacy of fossil fuels use?

One more reason to more toward cleaner energy sources?

For the sake of the planet.

For the sake of our children.

This is typical of gov't agencies, simply waivering responsibility to themselves when problems are inconvenient to deal with.

And this is the same gov't we put in charge of running our healthcare system. Is there no surprise why it is crumbling before it even gets off the ground?

Sounds like it should have been cleaned up a long time ago.

Groundwater remediation was started at Tinker AFB in OK about 1990. I believe it is still ongoing.

Most military bases are a pit of environmental no-nos... I remember when England AFB La. closed there was a mess to clean up before all control was to be turned over to the local civies. It was up to the Feds. to clean up the mess. Who knows if it actually got done.

From the article:

"NMED revised the estimate dramatically to 24 million gallons, an amount 240 times larger than the 2000 estimate."!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a big "accounting error".

On another note, I won't be drinking any local water when I travel through Albuquerque.

The gov't always exempts itself from the laws it creates, and covers up their problems and mis-deeds.

This is the reason we need multiple government agencies checking on each other to publicize and stop their coverups.

Well, it's not really disputed by people with access to the facts and numbers that the US government is by far the largest polluter. Which makes it so ironic that they're the same entity acting as a parent to the Environmental Protection Agency. Sort of puts the very existence of the EPA on shaky ground when you think about it that way.

But you're not allowed to. So forget everything I just said.

Just think the POTUS does the same thing and the taxpayers have to pay for all his and the first ladies junkets around the world on vacation. Quite a carbon footprint.
