DENVER - Bad things happen. Denver artist John Henley knows all about that.

In August, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. The new truck he bought a month ago was a celebration for beating it.

"[I] woke up last night [and heard a] big thump around 2:30 a.m. [It] sounded like the newspaper hitting the front yard," he said. "My wife opened the door and looked out says, 'Looks like there is a cop. No the cop car is on top of your truck.'"

It was parked off Monaco Parkway, in front of his home. He'd had it for only four weeks.

"You can see where it started," Henley described. "He pushed the truck 35 feet forward. We don't know it's totaled. We're working with the insurance, but it's done."

Funny how private citizens DEMAND more laws, more legislation, more restrictions... more BS that simply erodes our liberties and money... only to find out the officials and enforcers relied on so much to enforce such laws/legislation/restrictions have a hard time obeying and complying with these laws/legislation/restrictions....... There are no leaders, just tyrants.

Distracted driving happens to police officers as well and they shouldn't deny it. Glancing at the computer that police vehicles have is just as bad as glancing at your cellphone to read a text.

This is somewhat humorous, at least on the part of poking fun at the cop who hit the car, but not for the poor man who's nice new vehicle is ruined. Also, what has this to do with gas prices?

Good luck with the insurance company. Also, do you think the cop with have points taken away from his driving record for this? I think so. What a very stupid and dangerous mistake to make. The cops pull over other drivers for texting and give them tickets. I think he should get one to.

Compare this cop's punishment, particualrly if he's a union man, to what would happen if a citizen had rammed a cop's truck.

Since they drive for a living, sometimes these things happen? Consequences will be severe, like checking if it is a training issue? Just a bunch of excuses. He needs to be issued a ticket for distracted driving. This was a guys truck. Next time it could very well be a bicycle, pedestrian, someone IN the vehicle.

Distracted driving, could happen to any one of us, it only takes a second. Lucky no one was injured. Insurance should take care of this.

"I asked him what was going on, [he said] 'I feel terrible. I was looking at down at my computer. By the time I looked up, there was no time to even swerve. [I] just smacked the back end of it. All I heard was a big thump.'"

At least the cop was willing to take responsibility for his negligence. Hopefully the city will step up and get this guy a new truck pronto.

Police cars and officers have a lot of equipment these days with many things happening at the same time.

It's not like this happens all the time so it made the news.

How many people would want their job in this day and age?

So he will get another new truck. Will his gas mileage be any different? If not, why is the story on GasBuddy?

The sad reality is that police officers are basically or too frequently forced into ignoring the very basic and obvious safety rules.

For example, as in this case, he was busy on his computer (similar to cell phones) and didn't pull over and stop to use it. Wearing a seat belt,... gee they have to get out of their vehicle quickly so it's not "really" compulsory (it might impede their response time by a few seconds?). Etc...

But, if they end up causing an accident, they are then penalised (sometimes harshly) for engaging in a bad practice that's expected of them. Do we balk at paying for 2 officers per vehicle: of course.
