Reporter Tod Marks, who covers shopping for Consumer Reports as Tightwad Tod, tried booking a Hertz economy car for two days in Charlotte, N.C. His best rate: $69. That jumped to $99 after four layers of taxes, concession and facility surcharges (imposed when renting at an airport), and a fee to recoup the cost of plates and registration.

Next came a pitch for other extras: a waiver to relieve Marks of responsibility for damage, theft, and loss of vehicle use, $58 for two days, supplemental liability insurance, $28, personal accident insurance/effects coverage to pay some medical bills and replace stolen items, $14, and emergency roadside assistance, $10. The new total: $209. Another decision: whether to prepay for a fill-up, to avoid looking for a gas station before returning the car.

if they have a check-in kiosk use it! don't have to deal with insurance or bring it back empty sales pitch.

Never refuel at the rental car facility, it's been heard that they tend to gouge on fuel prices, and frankly, it serves a motorist right.
With the GasBuddy smartphone app, there's simply no longer any excuse for not locating the best deal on fuel nearest to the rental facility and taking advantage of it.

I have this Hertz program, and when booked months in advance. At time of searching for reservation; on the spot cost me $166.00, total cost. When I booked right then and there, was not bad for a full week and the vehicle was a Ford Edge loaded, with mileage = 686 miles.
I failed to mention this was July 2013.

Don't spend extra duplicating insurance you've already got. The return empty or full issue may depend on how well you know the area so you can return the tank full. And if you've already got an EZPass - take it with you. They'll even send you free extra adhesive strips for mounting.

Those add-ons add up fast. Most insurances should cover you if you rent a vehicle.

And use CarRentals.com. Site is not mentioned in the article but offers comparisons by rental company, car models. If you decide that you need extra insurance on your vehicle, which you probably don't if you used a major credit card and have insurance on your own car, then buy the insurance through CarRentals.com. Get just what you need on any car you rent so you can decline anything the local agent tries to sell you.

It's not only Hertz - they all do the same song and dance. About the only thing that makes me feel worse than renting a car is buying one. No matter how much "homework" I do or how prepared I am I always leave feeling like I need to take a long hot shower.

It is best to rent from a non-airport location who will pick you up. The avoids the large airport fees. If you have an existing automobile policy, it will cover you in the case of an accident, although this may be restricted to 7 days.

I rent cars only for company business. The company has its rates and supplemental selections already defined. I just follow the rules and get reimbursed after submitting an expense report. Otherwise, I just use my personal vehicle.
