American pedestrians and bicyclists are being killed by distracted drivers in increasing numbers, a new study finds.

Pedestrian deaths caused by distracted driving -- perhaps talking on cell phones, using a GPS or eating at the wheel -- jumped nearly 50 percent in a recent five-year period, reaching 500 in 2010.

The number of bicyclists killed by distracted drivers increased 30 percent, from 56 in 2005 to 73 in 2010, according to the study, which was published in the November-December issue of the journal Public Health Reports.

"We're constantly exposed to distracted drivers," study author Fernando Wilson, an associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said in a university news release.

is it any surprise when drivers use ear buds, yack on the phone and text... not to mention eating, singing and arguing. No wonder they're distracted.

Drive vehicles with high mpg, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Driving is serious business and when you're driving it's your only business.

You can go two way with this headline. I mean has anyone ever been driving properly and have some moron on a cell phone walk off a curb and in front of your car and then look at you as if you're to idiot? I'm sorry, but paying attention applies to everyone unless of course your personal life is more important than your conscious life!

Could this have any relationship to the rise in texting and other distracting electronic devices in cars?
