It seems every automaker is moving in the direction of having vehicles drive themselves on highways around the world. Why is a source of speculation? Fuel economy, reduced emissions and improved safety are all reasons cited by various car companies. Whatever the motive, automated driving is just around the corner and Toyota is set to introduce their take on this new technology by mid-2010.

Hopefully unintended acceleration issues will be solved before the vehicle is allowed to fully drive itself.

I worry that when the small stuff is laying in the road (the short 2x4), will the less attention afforded by automated drive that into other traffic? Then again, there is plenty of inattention today!
