Karen Freeman thought that she’d returned her Chrysler 200 sedan to the airport in Richmond, Va., with a full tank. She thought wrong.
“An agent noted that the tank was full,” says Freeman, an architect from Atlanta. The gauge also registered that the tank was at capacity, she says.

But a few days later, when she reviewed her credit card bill, she discovered that Avis had charged her an extra $7.43 for 0.8 gallons of gas, or about $9.29 per gallon. She called the company to complain.

“A representative told me that according to a satellite, when I picked up my car, it had 16.9 gallons in it,” she says. “And when I returned it, it had 16.1 gallons. I checked the ticket from pickup, and there’s no mention of the fuel quantity other than ‘G8’ — which means full.”

There should be no liability on the part of the customer for fuel in the gas tank that is greater that what is measurable and displayed within the vehicle at the start of, during and at the end of the vehicle rental just prior to returning the vehicle to the renting company. This means that if a vehicle rental company has the technology to measure the quantity of fuel in the vehicle gas tank to 1/10 of a gallon, then the gauge or electronic data read out carried within the rental vehicle should also be able to measure and disclose to the renter the exact same 1/10 of a gallon measurement so that the renter will know if additional fuel needs to be added to the fuel tank in order to return the vehicle with the exact same quantity of fuel that it held at the start of the rental.

Otherwise, the determination of what is a "full" state for a rental car fuel tank should only be determined by the vehicle's on board fuel gauge and not by any electronic fuel measurement technology that is more precise and that is not on board the rented vehicle and available to the renter during the rental.

And the person after Karen will return the car with 16.9 gallons in it, and Avis will happily pocket that extra. Greedy!

I don't believe that crap! Those companies are getting over. What about all of the people that always return cars with more gas than what they had in the beginning? If you ask me, they're making out like bandits.

This will be chalked up as another scam. Brought to you by the increase reliance on electrical components.

With all the new tracking devices, they can measure up to the .1 gallons and charge you $20 a gallon. "

And no political party in Washington will help either.

How does the consumer know that the tank was completely full when it's picked up? Maybe they should weigh the car before and after being loaded to determine fuel levels in and out.

If the system can accurately register the amount of fuel in the tank at any time, the all vehicles should truly have a completely full tank every time. Consumers have no control over a fill up pump nozzle if they allow the device to shut of automatically. They need to provide the customer prior to return to rental facility, the actual amount of fuel needed to return to the departure amount. Then the rental customer will know how much fuel is needed to avoid the add charge.

Looked at Richmond gas buddy and not many stations charge more than $3.50 a gallon. Avis cheated herby charging her $7.43 for .8 of a gallon of gas. That why I never rent a car from Avis! You shouldn't either.
