The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday sought to calm a furor over its apparent proposal to reduce ethanol use in gasoline next year, saying that no final decisions had been made about the contentious mandate.

On Thursday, Reuters and other news outlets reported on EPA documents that showed the agency proposing an unexpected drop in the amount of corn-based ethanol that would be required for blending next year, a historic retreat from the 2007 biofuel law and a major victory for the oil industry."

At this point, EPA is only developing a draft proposal," EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a statement in the agency's first public response to the reports.

The EPA documents seen by Reuters could not be independently verified. They were dated Aug. 26 and Sept. 6, around

Anything coming out of Oblamer's EPA should be viewed with skepticism due to all of the Administration's lies, coverups, scandals, & Chicken Little approach to the govt shutdown & debt ceiling. Give me a freaking break!!

Let's hand it to the EPA, they really know how to lead someone on (kind of like the government talks about the current stalemate).

Sounds like the usual political back-pedaling to me. They floated the announcement, now they're acting on the feedback. It has nothing to do with the merits of anything and everything to do with the careers of the politicians and bureaucrats involved.

Why not? Just because you say so? IMHO, you are probably not technically knowledgeable enough to rewrite ASTM D 4814. When you are, you might have some legitimate standing in this discussion.

>The EPA lives in the stone age as they insist on pushing
>ethanol which is a waste of corn.

Ever heard of dried distillers' grain? It's what's left of the corn after they produce fuel ethanol. So far, it's only fed to cattle. Great stuff, lots of protein.

>There are people starving around the world

So you really think we should feed the world rather than teaching them to feed themselves? You must be a DemocRAT food stamp fanboy.

>and they waste corn for fuel which is harmful to vehicles

Vehicles have been E-10 compatible for thirty years. If you can find a vehicle that has trouble with E-10, you'll invariably find it has the same kind of troubles with E-0 EPA test gasoline.

>in addition to obtaining poor MPG.

A canard unless you're going for sheer run range on a tank of gas. Me? My endurance is less than my vehicle's. I usually put in about $15 at a time when I'm traveling just to get out and stretch.

>Isn't that enough reason to STOP using it.

No, it is not. EPA did not come up with the rationale for using oxygenates out of whole cloth. Guess you people in Illinois must really dig high carbon monoxide levels. Probably the reason you foisted Barack Obama off on the rest of the country.

About ten nanoseconds after living under a system where "let the market decide" rules, you would be whining for the Government to bring back good old fashioned consumer protection.

We had "let the market decide" in the past and the market was proven to be untrustworthy. Greed is almost always mutually exclusive with the public good. If it was up to the market, Twinkies would be even more of a mystery food than they are already.

Or would you prefer the antibiotic where the manufacturer realized it was soluble in glycol and so they marketed a toxic concoction? Big Pharma killed a number of patients with that stunt.

Big Business is to be trusted about as far as I can pick up and throw a Boeing 747.

No to ethanol. The EPA lives in the stone age as they insist on pushing ethanol which is a waste of corn. There are people starving around the world and they waste corn for fuel which is harmful to vehicles in addition to obtaining poor MPG. Isn't that enough reason to STOP using it.

Another case of the media getting it wrong or the greenies forcing the EPA to retreat from one of their rare moments of common sense?
