If you are a driver and have loved ones — and that's pretty much all of us — you like to keep both your car and those close to you as safe as possible. That, in a way, sums up the Car Connection from Audiovox. Among other things, the device lets you monitor driver behavior and the whereabouts of your vehicle, with all the information steered directly to your laptop or smartphone via a cellular GPS signal. Designed to plug into a car's diagnostic port, it tracks how fast your car is driven and how far it travels from home. It also can block cellphone usage while in gear, direct you to the car (in case you forget where you parked) and monitor the car's maintenance needs. The device costs about $150 and requires a $20 activation fee. Service plans vary from $9.95 a month to about $90 a yea

Soon we'll be like China - no privacy, the way Obama likes it.
When you sign up for Obamacare, the first thing they want is your checking account information.

Oh boy! Now, my hacker "friend" can cause the car to slam on the brakes. Good luck with that especially since the car computer has NO malware protection (outside of not being networked). Let'ps everybody park your car in "Harlem" and leave the windows down and the keys on the dashboard. Needless to say, I don't think I want "that convenience".

My car has been running just fine for 220,000 miles. No need to add a device with faulty software that will corrupt its operation.

Get outa here! What on earth makes you think that NSA won't be selling this data to any govt agency that's out for revenue?

A hidden app that has been placed on all the kids phones costs nothing - and gives you all the GPS info you could ever need, BCC copies all their texts and email to you - and - records ALL their voice comms. No matter who they are with or what/whose car they are in.

The Madison Avenue ads from Audiovox say - "A smart two—way communication interface is created when you plug Car Connection into your vehicle's OBII port, which is located under your dash. Once you've plugged in Car Connection, and registered your vehicle online, it beings sharing vital information with you that immediately improves your safety and security and that of your loved ones each day."

"it beings sharing vital information with you" and everyone else??

If you're talking about monitoring teenage drivers, they will be able to modify these or disconnect them very easily. Plus, one day soon, they'll be built in and Big Brother will be monitoring them.

This is not a new idea, just another provider. Not sure about the cell phone blocking capability. This could cause other problems.

The government doesn't need this data. You are already tracked through traffic cameras, your cell phone and, if you have it, your car's GPS.

Very helpful for some, especially parents, I suppose.

The fees for purchase, activation, and monthly service caught my attention. I suppose there would be a restocking fee as well. That's how profits are maximized. The idea applies to airlines and bags, banks and talking to a live person, and more. Perhaps one day all roads will be toll roads.
