U.S. natural-gas drillers take note: Some of your best customers are hoping you can raise prices.

The U.S. chemical industry is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the North American shale boom. The price of natural gas has plummeted as hydraulic fracturing, horizontal drilling and other innovations have unlocked vast amounts of natural gas from previously unproductive shale formations.

If prices fall, the profit margins fall too.

the picture in the article reminds me that I'm always bugged that the fuel burned off is simply wasted and there really must be some way to make use of it... make steam to make heat/electricity or something

It is a study in philosophy.

LyondellBassell is a Dutch company which would choose sustainability over profits knowing that without the former the latter is a fleeting thing.

Dow is an American company with an eye only for next quarters profit and no long term outlook.

We love the lower prices but remember that it cost money for research and development which in the end lowers cost by finding new fuel deposits and proper us of the fuels that they do find.

This is done with profit. Their must be a balance between fair profit and servicing the customer. I don't mind bit oil making a profit. I just don't ant to be raped in the process or have to sell my first born to fill up my gas tank.
