For many decades, we have been relying on fossil resources to produce liquid fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and many industrial and consumer chemicals for daily use. However, increasing strains on natural resources as well as environmental issues including global warming have triggered a strong interest in developing sustainable ways to obtain fuels and chemicals.
Previously, through metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli (E. coli), there have been a few research results on the production of long-chain alkanes, which consist of 13-17 carbon atoms, suitable for replacing diesel. However, there has been no report on the microbial production of short-chain alkanes, a possible substitute for gasoline.

I beg to disagree. While I agree that EVs can fill 95+ of all driving needs, they are still highly dependent on limited resources from foreign countries that are not necessarily friendly to the USA. Rare Earth metals in the motors and lithium for batteries come to mind.

IMHO, growing fuel will be the future, but it should be much, much more efficient than ethanol via corn. Its the import duties that prevent the cheaper ethanol from Brazil made from more efficient sugar cane waste.

I think EV technology will end up being a better resource than this. It all depends on the electric source though, it is only helpful if the energy source is renewable.

Cool. Eventually (hopefully) with economy of scale it would be cheap enough to replace fossil fuels.

Makes for a lifetime job for the researchers even if there is little demand for it today.

I would have thought that gasoline is too toxic for a living organism to actually produce it in much quantity. Ethanol will kill the yeast that produces it at about 14%. Then it must be distilled to concentrate it further.

We'll have to see what the price point is and what, if any, the drawbacks might be.

Interesting that they have technology to come up with Diesel fuel and the topic only mentions the production of gasoline. Especially when the text says they haven't come up with anything for gasoline yet.

The future will be less dependent on fossil fuels.

Unfortunately some will never believe that change is coming.
