MARSHALL, Mich. (AP) - State health officials say chemicals in surface water from a 2010 oil spill on the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan are expected to cause no long-term harm to people during recreational activities like wading, swimming or canoeing.

The Michigan Department of Community Health on Monday released a public health assessment for portions of the river impacted by the spill in Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties.

The report says contact with oil sheen and globules may cause skin irritation.

For those looking for absolute statements, the river was not clean enough 200 years before the spill. 200 years ago, the tannic acid from tree leaves, minerals leached from the soil, and animal waste would be contaminating the water. I expect you'll find those same contaminants today.

Not much information in this article, but Enbridge still needs to finish the clean-up of the Kalamazoo River.

Enbridge needs to do a better job of pipeline maintenance.

I'm happy for the people who were effected by this spill, but am still concerned and worried for them as I don't trust Enbridge at all and I don't trust the government telling us that everything is "cleaned up" and better. The damage to the environment has been done and we will not know the full extent of the damage for possibly generations, as fish, birds, etc die, plants die and trees die off.

Wait until it mixes with some industrial chemicals, gets exposed to some high levels of radiation, and then gets struck by lightning during a freak storm.

We all see what is coming next, right?

The fact that it is in a river should keep working to flow the stuff out. A flood on that river would help.

May be cancer or something show up in later years. They don't know for sure there won't be long term harm.
