It won't matter if you're obeying every other traffic law: Starting Tuesday, if you're talking on a hand-held mobile phone while driving in Maryland, the police will have the right to pull you over and ticket you.

The new law tightening the state's curb on cellphone use behind the wheel is one of hundreds that will take effect Tuesday as a result of General Assembly action this year. Among the others are high-profile measures banning the sale of some types of guns and repealing the death penalty.

More severe penalties need to be enforced.

It would be nice if Texas passed a law making it a ticketable violation to use, while in the act of driving, any hand held communication device to include cell phones, tablets, laptops, etcetera but not CB radios. This proposed new Texas law should allow the use of hands free communication devices by the driver while in the act of driving as well as allow any passengers in a vehicle to also use any hand held or hands free communication device.

I can't say that "secondary laws" are very meaningful anyway. If you're going to have a law, then enforce it.

They can have all the ridiculous laws they want, if they don't enforce them they are just words on paper.

i'm sure 'failure to maintain control' was already illegal...just another law to clog things up...

What a great law. I have a phone in our new car and the passenger can answer it or use it while I drive.

Then they must absolutely enforce the Daydreaming Law too where Police would pull you over for not paying 100% attention to your driving because you were daydreaming.

"The law bans the sale of 45 types of long guns classified as assault rifles, along with handguns whose magazines accept more than 10 rounds."

So, no more semi-automatic pistol sales in Maryland? At least not legally.

Interesting that this law is listed along with a law about guns and a law about the death penalty. Cell phones are a very serious business.

It was only a matter of time with all the distracted driving. I hope that the Federal government doesn't get into the act.
