A refinery in northwest Ohio is seeking state approval for a $300 million upgrade to refine tar sands from Alberta, Canada.

The proposal calls for the company to make changes to existing units to allow the processing of heavy oil. Equipment upgrades and a new sulfur recovery unit are part of the plan.

The heavy oil would be transported to the refinery through existing pipelines, according to the newspaper.

The Lima refinery, formerly owned by BP, is used by Husky to produce up to 155,000 barrels of petroleum products a day, mostly from lighter crude. The retrofit would allow Husky to produce 40,000 barrels a day from either heavy crude or bitumen...

Earlier this year, BP-Husky Refining unveiled a $400 million addition to BP's Toledo refinery in Oregon for refining tar sands as part of

"Lima Energy Company, a subsidiary of USA Synthetic Fuel Corporation in Washington, D.C., has signed a contract to supply up to 80 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) of Ultra Clean Synthetic Crude (“UCSC”) to Husky Energy’s Lima Refinery over ten years.

"The Ultra Clean Synthetic Crude represents a breakthrough in low cost clean energy, as it is sold at a discount to the oil market and is a high quality product with less than 1 part per million (ppm) sulfur content. In addition, the UCSC will be manufactured next door to the Lima Refinery, eliminating the significant supply costs and logistics of transporting oil."

Why don't they refine it in Canada? I guess that would make too much sense.

"why not keep it in Canada SEND it to Sarnia with the existing pipelines"

Sarnia doesn't have the capacity to take it all. Plenty left over for other refiners throughout the Midwest and Gulf Coast.
