First Nations near Cold Lake, AB, are angry an oilsands company is draining a lake close to their home without consulting them

Canadian Natural Resources is emptying 2/3 of the lake in an effort to stop a bitumen leak from its oil production plant

Cecil Janvier, a member of the Cold Lake First Nation, says he has never supported oilsands production

More than 1.5M L of bitumen — a mixture of oil sands, heavy crude and water — has leaked on CNRL's Cold Lake Site. So much, so fast, Alberta Environment ordered CNRL to drain the lake near Janvier's home immediately

Trevor Gemmell, with AB Environment, says it was an emergency, and because it was an order, no consultation with the First Nation was required

Janvier says draining the lake isn't acceptable

CNRL is aiming to refill the lake

"Remind me why I care?"

Umm, because environmental damage like this will drive added costs to production, eventually driving gas prices up? Or are you more interested in "top ten" articles?

Reported last Tuesday by other media. Why did it take CBC this long to get around to reporting it?

Quite a drastic action to be taken without broad communication.

This is another example of people in the government NOT doing their job when these tailing ponds were first setup. They were told years ago that they were leaking and they denied it was happening NOW IT'S AN EMERGENCY! Way to go government people, you should be put in jail, you were paid to watch this and took kick-backs to ignore the problem.
