Two House Democrats are urging Congress to investigate oil and gas spills caused by massive flooding in Colorado – a state where the number of oil and gas wells has doubled since 2006, when horizontal drilling and fracking were introduced.

Colorado’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) said in its latest report Thursday that it was tracking 12 spills, 14 sites with evidence of a small spill, and 60 sites with visible damage to storage tanks.

"The point is you can control the level of responsibility these oil companies need to take in preparing for different weather outcomes. They need to do a better job or get out!"
=====================================================
ONLY 12 spills, 14 "maybe" small spills, and 60 with visible damage but no spill out of over 20,000 oil and gas wells.

So we have 0.06% of the wells with a spill.
And we have 0.07% of the wells with a possible small spill.
And we have 0.3% with "visible damage to tank" but no leaks.

I'd say in an epic flood event that's pretty damn good!

Now go check on New Orleans and see how the government levees held up!

As others have pointed out you can't control the weather, however that's not the point. The point is you can control the level of responsibility these oil companies need to take in preparing for different weather outcomes. They need to do a better job or get out!

Floods of the kind seen in Colorado are rare occurrences, but still common enough that the drilling industry needs to be prepared to deal with them. If this hearing results in requirements for greater safety measures to limit the impact of natural disasters, then it is worthwhile.

I call for a hearing into why these two liberal democrats did nothing to prevent the storms that produced the floods in CO!

After all they claim they can control the climate!

You cant't control the weather. However, they should be doing everything they can to secure the drilling sites.

If this is a witch hunt, than spare us the cost and agony. If we are investigating this spill so we can learn from the disaster and make the needed changes at future wells, then go for it.

I'm sure the teabaggers will find a way to screw up this debate, too.
