Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, who headed the development of the Prius, said automakers should step up their efforts on hybrids so cumulative U.S. sales will reach 5 million in three years.

“It’s only when we put ourselves under the same kind of intense pressure we faced in developing the Prius that we can achieve great goals,” Uchiyamada said at the Economic Club of Washington D.C. today. “I wish to call on the industry to sell 5 million hybrids in the U.S. by the end of 2016.”

That’s a 72 percent more than the 2.9 million hybrid vehicles sold in the U.S. until August, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates. The Toyota City, Japan-based carmaker is the world’s largest producer of gasoline-electric hybrids, with the company estimating to have sold more than 3 million Prius

Really happy with our 2nd Camry hybrid purchase. Our first one had 118k miles on it & had sustained hail damage do we decided to take the payoff & trade it in on a new model. They're the best!

Buy a hybrid, if it feels right for the buyer to buy a hybrid.

Buy a Toyota hybrid, if it feels right for the buyer to buy a Toyota.

Buy a new Toyota hybird, if it feels right for the buyer to buy new.

Hybrids are good, but I've always wondered how much the system actually contributes to gas mileage for the complexity that it adds. I.e., I'd love to see how a non-hybrid version of a Prius performs (good aerodynamics, shut off ignition during stops, etc. but no regenerative braking and hybrid battery).

Hybrid is a good technology to increase mpg without bringing on range anxiety.

Domestic auto manufacturers are starting to see the profitability of selling hybrid vehicles. Most Americans are expecting hybrid-level fuel economy and are getting used to the concept of hybrid vehicles. Its not hard to believe that hybrid popularity and thus sales number will increase to this level soon.

What else would you expect him to say since the Prius is the largest selling Hybrid car in the market today. This is a self-serving comment by Uchiyamada.

Obviously, encouraging a broader acceptance of hybrids will benefit Toyota more than anyone else since they dominate the hybrid marketplace and can expect to maintain a commanding lead if the overall market for these vehicles expands.
