When autumn comes, the auto industry fills with hope about its new and refreshed models. But just as the sleek new cars make their way to showrooms, a raft of familiar names are headed straight to the automotive dustbin.

This year, the Volkswagen Routan minivan is waving goodbye. So is the Acura ZDX car crossover, the compact Volvo C30 car and C70 convertible. Others have quietly faded out during the year as production ended, such as the Chevrolet Avalanche sport pickup and the Jeep Liberty SUV.

Why do models die? "If they are eliminating a model, it's because it is being replaced by a new model or it was a failed, outrageous try at something new that didn't work," says Jesse Toprak, senior analyst for TrueCar.com.

Didn't even know VW had a minivan. Had a Volvo once, but they have gotten more expensive and have not kept up in gasoline mileage efficiency.

They quit making Ford Sport Tracs in 2009/2010. This was more streamlined than the Avalanche. I understand new models, but car companies don't understand loyalty anymore.

Good to see that some of them are SUV types. As long as they get replaced by more fuel efficient models or not even replaced at all.

At least then we could tell what they were. Todays cars (and so-called SUV's and CUV's) look like escapees from an off-road rally. Just plain FUGLY.

Auto makers over the years have dumped some good model for, well, crap. Like when Chrysler dump the Jeep (XJ) Cherokee. I was working at a dealership and you don't know how customers B*tch when they came in to do their 2 year trade up that the XJ was no more. Of course Chrysler only wanted the "Jeep" name & their inline 6 engine. The only thing that still looks like a jeep is the Wrangler & then they made it a 4 door. But on the flip side some models need to go cause they are just plain dog ugly and run like a piece of crap.

The manufacturers are still looking for successful offerings. Many of the vehicles were not selling because the premium was too high when compared to other vehicles from the same manufacturer or the competitors.

The only one I'll miss seeing on the roads is the Volvo C30...but even that was just a visual approximation of the old P1800.

I understand the reasoning but I'm sure there are thousands of owners that are now wondering what they will be replacing their eliminated model with. And even though the model may not have been 'working', this can drive some current faithful customers to another manufacturer. I really liked my Isuzu Trooper and they stopped making them so that when it came to replacing the old vehicle, I went out and got a Chevy. Nothing else that Isuzu made appealed.

Avalanche, good riddance. Never liked it.
Jeep Liberty, well, the Liberty replaced the Cherokee, now the Cherokee is replacing the Liberty. Same difference.
Routan never should have been released.
