Royal Dutch Shell just took a major first step that could have American natural gas soon fueling everything from 18-wheelers to airplanes. With the global oil giant settling on a site in Louisiana for a proposed gas-to-liquids facility, Shell is one step closer to starting construction on the massive $12.5 billion project. The facility, if built, would bring new jobs, economic development and cleaner burning products to America.

This sounds like it is a good investment for Shell and an excellent way for the US natural gas excess supply to be converted to other dropin motor vehicle fuels that the US and other countries economies must have.

Sounds like a big risk and an expensive process, but it will lend more flexibility to the gasoline and diesel supply. Must be a lot of NIMBY's in Europe.

A little history here.
The Shell Middle Distillate Process to convert natural gas to liquid hydrocarbons started in the US. The Process is based on the Fischer- Tropshe process invented in Germany in 1926 and used by the Germans to make gasoline and diesel from coal during WWII.

A company called Badger in Pennsylvania invented the process. Badger was bought by Gulf, Gulf was bought by OXY, and Armand Hammer sold the rights to the process to Shell.

Shell built the plant in Bintulu, Malaysia using the Gulf-Badger process, and has been marketing it around the world where associated gas was either flared or reinjected.

The announced plant would be a homecoming for the process, and a new use as the first plant built in a country with a developed natural gas industry

I hope the main focus is on semi's and heavy duty trucks. That would make an enormous difference in foreign oil consumption, and justify their greatly added cost very quickly.
