A director of the Finnish telecommunications giant, Nokia, has received what is believed to be the most expensive speeding ticket ever.

Anssi Vanjoki, 44, has been ordered to pay a fine of 116,000 euros ($103,600) after being caught breaking the speed limit on his Harley Davidson motorbike in the capital, Helsinki, in October last year.

Police say he was driving at 75 km/h (47 mph) in a 50km/h (31 mph) zone.

In Finland, traffic fines are proportionate to the latest available data on an offender's income.

Speeding is lawbreaking, no matter what you are driving.

I support high fines for high speeding and reckless endangerment, but crash victims die no matter what the income of the speeder was.

That might help educate the Mercedes/Beemer/Lexus crowd that they are not above the laws because they can afford expensive cars.

One step removed from socialist state with Nordic welfare. So the incentive is to have minimal income. Sound familiar?

Need to try fines like that over here. I'm tired of almost being run off the road by idiots in their BMW, or Mercedes, who think that the laws don't apply to them!

I'll go for progressive fines as long as we also get progressive votes.

You know one vote per 10,000 dollars of actual income, sorry welfare, alimony, child support and disability payments don't count only actual taxable income (yes capital gains count since the Gov't considers them income).

That seems fair right!!

Put governors on bikes not allowing them to go over 30mph and then restrict them to side streets only.

Like in Switzerland, fines are based on yearly income. One can go to far I think, it's excessive.

By the way, 116,000 Euro = US$156,600. I guess the person who did write this article got lost between Euro & British Pound & US$, he is from Britain!

Interesting concept of pegging the amount of the fine based on one's income. Don't think that would fly here.

Sounds like a very fair system that could be applied in other areas.

Yes, it is an old article (ancient by Internet standards) but it does bring forth an interesting point. I, too, think we need this kind of system here, not because I'm a "socialist" (I'm sure most know me better than that by now :) ) but because a fine should be a genuine punishment for those being fined (surely I can get my fellow conservatives to agree on *that*). Of course, there should be a certain minimum, you shouldn't use a person's three-year-old financial data to assess such a fine, and perhaps a certain maximum, too, because I can agree that $100,000+ for 25kph/15mph over the limit is excessive (you know, eighth amendment and all). $100.00 and a doubling of insurance rates doesn't quite cut it for this set, though - that's not even a tap on the wrist for them.

If a $200.00 fine gets your attention when you make minimum wage, what will it take to get the attention of someone making $500.00 an hour?
