WASHINGTON — The Interior Department has warned that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline could have long-term, damaging effects on wildlife near its route, contradicting the State Department's March draft environmental assessment, which concluded the project would have only a temporary, indirect impact.

In a 12-page letter sent as part of the public comment on the draft assessment, the Interior Department repeatedly labels as inaccurate its sister agency's conclusions that Keystone XL would have short-lived effects on wildlife and only during the project's construction.

Of course the Interior Department sees environmental dangers behind every project, they have to toe King Barry's line...

I also agree with "yzarc69" :

"Big Oil doesn't care about the planet, just there own pocket book like most of our elected leaders."

The only purpose to build the XL is to have the Canadian tar-sands crude bypass DOZENS of US refineries, cross the largest aquifer in North America, and end in Texas where it'll be EXported to China, India, & Europe. It won't add to our inventories, end up in OUR fuel pumps, or help OUR market.

The ONLY winner is Big Oil.

Of course the pipeline will harm wildlife. The question is how much?

Building the White House caused permanent harm to whatever lived in that place before too. Does that mean we should tear it down and restore the marsh? Get over it, people! We won't stop affecting our environment until we're extinct. Maybe that would make them happy (at least it would shut everyone up).

Why would the State Dept draft a wildlife assessment?
Outside of their area of expertise I would say.

Cutting my lawn last week effected the wildlife in my suburban neighborhood - the deer ran away and the birds flew away. Duh!! Everything we do has an effect on the environment.
More wasted government spending repeatedly doing assessments/studies to please the tree huggers.

Same BS was said about the pipeline in Alaska. The caribou love it. The population has increased.

Funny, the exact same things were said about the Alaska pipeline, and all such claims were patently false.
