Motor vehicles should be equipped with "connected technology" that could help drivers avoid accidents, according to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The call comes in a report NTSB filed following an investigation into a deadly collision between a Mack truck and a school bus at an intersection in New Jersey last year. NTSB concludes that connected vehicle technology, or machine-to-machine (M2M) communication tools, could have provided active warnings to the bus driver and possibly prevented the crash. Researchers currently are developing M2M communication technology that would enable vehicles to exchange data and know what is taking place around them. For example, researchers at Intel and National Taiwan University...

More stuff that can break and/or cause problems and raise the price of vehicles. If you are a halfway decent driver, you already know what's going on around you at all times. This is just an excuse for people to become even worse drivers.

seems like a good idea, since so many drivers are either distracted or rude nowadays. Extra safety is good.

If my car could speak, then it would say some nasty words, and the do it for the kids liberals wouldn't like that and the theocrat conservatives would lecture me on their version of the Bible.

More and more big brother, black box for cars, all will have GPS in the near future, OnStar systems, hence big brother always knows where you are & where you go.

Big Brother already knows more about us than I am comfortable with, and I don't want to give them another data collection mechanism. It may accomplish its stated objective or reducing crashes (so would attentive drivers), but this technology would also make it easier for the government to track your every move or compile a database of driving habits. Any M2M communication should have a very limited range (100 ft?) and contain no personally identifiable information - so police cannot place monitors to direct officers where to find traffic offenders (even after the offense).

Future cars talking to each other:

Hacker Car: Hey, where has your driver been?

Your Car: The grocery and just now the bank.

Hacker Car: Pull over to the curb so I can rob you. Here's the code.

Your Car: Ok.

If it weren't for the government's intrusion in the road industry, manufacturers would have put this in place years ago. No technological challenge, just a matter of doing it. But you can't do stuff easily when you have bureaucrats on your back.

The feds want a lot of things it doesn't mean they will be good things, I can't see this working, for you to respond to a warning would mean you will need to receive it quite sometime in advance, and then you would be getting so many of them. Cars can't predict the future

Extra warnings can't hurt, but it really gets down to the two drivers alertness and paying attention.

Something for the hackers to hack and easier for the government to track and spy on everybody.Just will have to ask the car to be a tattletale.Amusing and scary.

This idea has a long way to go before it is accepted. Need to concentrate more on the "computer" that is between the driver's ears.
