Michigan legislators are considering asking voters next year to support increasing the state sales tax to 7 percent.

The state’s 6 percent sales tax on gasoline raises about $1.2 billion and goes primarily toward education and cities.

The new proposal would allocate $1.2 billion for roads. The added revenues from the 1 percent sales tax increase would go to education and cities.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Their gas prices are the highest in the region already. Don't know if this increase in taxes will do much in improving their roadways - they are just going to get torn by their nasty winters!

Why a general sales tax? Wouldn't a usage tax be better?

Wow 6% sales tax! That's amazing & very low. I think this is a good idea as long as the extra 1% truly goes to the roads.

So where's the original 6% of the taxes are going? The current corrupt governor who hates democracy will simply take the money as he's doing already. My sympathy for the good citizens of Michigan for being stuck with their lousy legislators. Vote smarter next time.

As long as people continue to live on welfare and more are doing it all the time, there is more going out than coming in so this is always going to be a problem.

Gas taxes should ONLY go to roads and transportation, it should have never been going anywhere else.

They should eliminate waste and cut spending rather than raise taxes. Keep raising taxes then people wont have anymore money to spend. There's a saying by Margaret Thatcher that the problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Stop with the tax increases!
That's all the government does.
We don't have an income problem, we have a spending problem.
It's time to change all this. Urgent.

And the profits from lottery go to the schools. Yeah, right. That's why so many school districts are broke.

We pay a lot in gas tax in Illinois and the roads don't seem to be much better than other states.

What happens when the sales tax reaches 100% and the roads remain under maintained and the tax moneyu has ended up elsewhere - perhaps in politician pockets?

Sales taxes are regressive. They proportionately tax those most who would be less likely to use the roads.

I support fair taxes. The funds are used to provide what individuals cannot provide for themselves. I simply have a gut reaction against the sales tax. Perhaps irrationally, just don't like sales taxes.

This would be good if they would actually use it for roads but as we all know it usually is used for other things than the roads.

That sounds like they have been spending way to much on education and cities for the price of fuel tax.

Those should be paid out of the states 6 % tax on goods and services.

Gas tax should have been used for roads in the first place imho.
