John Paul Morgan got the inspiration for starting a solar company while he was working for Doctor’s Without Borders in the Congo. It blew him away that all it took was a couple of solar modules and a pump to replace the toil of 20 women trudging up and down the hill all day carrying water to the hospital.

Before he left he set up the solar powered system to bring clean, running water to the hospital. Since then the physicist slash engineer has dedicated himself to building a better, cheaper solar panel.

“If there's a way to make electricity affordable enough that those people in that village could afford it and use it and be empowered by it, and have lights to read by and mills to mill their flour with and pumps to move their water, the world would be a better place,” says Morgan.

Hmmm, I'm not sure, but was the first thing he did was put 20 women out of work?

What I find interesting in reviewing the news articles from the past 3 years is there is a definite change in the number of articles on renewable energy. Some are positive, others negative, and the discussions are increasing in number and quality.

The women can now be trained as care providers.

Study wind energy and see if a windmill can also be used to pump water up the hill.

Sun and wind together can, will make for a brighter future in the Congo.

People keep coming up with new advances in solar. Prices keep coming down. It seems like we are beginning to turn the corner away from fossil fuels.

I would like to work with them - for free if I didn't have to make a living.

That would be exciting...

Good going. Notice how the impetus was a desire to help people rather than obtain big profits or exercise greed. We need more of this.

The use of lens to gather and focus light on panels has never been explored before? I'm embarrassed.

In the US he'd have to worry about the environmentalists complaining of the 1 or 2 trees he had to cut down to put up the solar dish and have had to do a 3 year study to make sure he wasn't displacing some flesh eating bacteria's natural habitat.

Interesting that they are using Fresnel lenses (think lighthouses and 1951 Fraser automobile taillights) and the honeycomb shape. Note that these high efficiency panels are not efficient as fixed rooftop applications, but really as tracking units. Anyone who used to have one of the old satellite TV dishes will get the size--just replace the dish with a flat panels made up of a dozen or so of these units, and have it track the sun each day east to west. Not so hard--a local has made one of these with four of the flat PV solar panels and the base/mast of an old satellite dish, and it tracks from sunrise to sunset, adjusting an inch or so every 15 minutes, and those 4 panels made 100% efficient all day long are as much as maybe a dozen or so placed on a roof. It powers up his electric car and his house, and I think he sell the excess to the utility for income.

article does not say where these solar panels are manufactured.
