It may be easy to question now at the height of an American energy boom, but the Environmental Protection Agency had good intentions when it announced the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2005. At the time, energy independence seemed like a pipe dream, domestic fuel consumption was hitting record highs each year, and the nation's auto fleet was by no means topping the charts in efficiency. Many experts questioned whether the nation would ever be free of imported oil. Igniting a national biofuels industry could have huge implications if the EPA was successful. What did the country have to lose? Agribusiness giants such as Archer Daniels Midland went all-in on the new corn ethanol industry, using their massive distribution network to supply billions of gallons of fuel each year. Even refiners

The EPA and the current administration in Washington still insist on forcing the use of ethanol/gasoline blends despite EPA research showing that it is not as effective at reaching any of the stated goals as was once believed.

You can see how powerful the corporate agricultural lobbyists are when even the auto industry has spoken against higher ethanol use yet the push for more ethanol continues.

Ethanol is no good for the Environment or lessening the Gasoline used.

Ethanol has a lower BTU output burned than reg. Gasoline so you get less MPG even in post 2007 vehicles designed to endure Ethanol.

It has caused over destruction of Trees cleared for Ethanol fuel Crops causing more co2 accumulation than if we had stayed with reg gasoline without Ethanol.

It has caused higher land prices leading to even higher food prices due to cost of land.

It has contributed to worse Global food shortages due to land being used to make more money on selling crops for Ethanol than growing food for human consumption.

All this is just for starters, because there are even more reasons they should stop Ethanol. Instead Pres Obama signed a bill early this year to increase the % Ethanol in Gasoline.

To stop Ethanol you have to get Obama out of Office.

wish the ethanol would go away, or lower it's content.. it really isn't doing much.. makes gas get fewer miles per gallon.. not sure the trade off is worth it.. besides the cars having been re-designed to run the ethanol mix...

I believe anhydrous ethanol is far too susceptible to phase separation to be used practically as a transportation fuel.

The EPA can waive the current mandates, but instead they are choosing to ruin our cars, ruin our economy, and ruin the environment.

No, Congress cannot get rid of the mandate because DemocRATs control the Senate and the White House. DemocRATs established the current mandates in 2007. Obama voted in favor of the mandates established in 2005 and in 2007. His 2008 campaign for president stated he plans to double the mandates established in 2007. So we have to change party control in the Senate and White House to eliminate the mandates.

What they are doing is ruining it, making it where it will damage a car with ethanol add ins, and keeping the prices high. That is what the EPA is doing with our gas! It is time for Congress to throw the EPA out and represent the people who elected them and not the big businesses who are paying them bribes.

Pointing the finger at the EPA? Ridiculous. Congress could get rid of the mandate any time they want. Your representative in the Midwest is propping up the corporate farms.

I agree with this ..."The RFS may have been a reasonable thing to try in 2005 but it has proven to be worthless so should be repealed. There is no need to ban ethanol; just make it optional and let each vehicle owner decide what fuel to put in his tank.""

And cut the tax exemptions for ethanol..
