Volvo released details of its new Drive-E family of powertrains on Friday. Vehicles with the extra-efficient engines will arrive at dealerships early next year.

Drive-E is also Volvo's name for all of its green innovations, encompassing everything from a sustainable manufacturing process, use of recycled materials and low-emission powertrains.

As the owner of several Volvos over the years (three currently), they have been well engineered, but not the most fuel efficient vehicles. This technology is promising: however, I hope Volvo stops being so guarded about their service information so independent repair shops can start working on the newer models without having to invest thousands of dollars annually to do so. Volvo dealers are too expensive and all they want to do is replace parts until they find the problem!

Cool innovation. MPGs will depend on which vehicle engines are installed. A 26% savings in fuel economy seems pretty high...

Will they get the same mileage as a diesel? They don't point to the actual MPG you'll get, just some percentage better than current.

Time will tell if these new engines work well and last. Either way, the price of a Volvo will make them expensive.

Too bad Volvo will not be bringing in its existing V60 plug-in electric/DIESEL hybrid--over 35 miles in pure electric range, incredible torquey clean diesel power for highway cruising, or a mix. And all at way above 100 mpg average.
