Remember how much time and energy was spent focusing on Detroit and the auto bailouts during the 2012 presidential election?

More specifically, do you remember all the attention that was paid to the Chevy Volt, the hybrid electric vehicle that was supposed to mark the rebirth of General Motors?

Now think back. Have you heard that much about it recently? No? Neither have we. So we started looking into the issue to figure out what happened.

First, let’s take a look at what appears to be a general decline in interest in the Volt.

The Chevy Volt might need some improvement.

I spend a lot of time in northern California. From Tahoe to Sacramento to the Oregon state line. I've yet to see a single Volt.

Even here in the "Fruit & Nut" land of California, I see very few Volts being driven by private owners. Most are driven by governments or big companies trying to get on Obama's good side. Although the technology is promising, the finished product inspires yawns and even with the many rebates, is way to expensive compared to the offerings from the competition. Maybe they will give one to Obama so he can be buried in it someday!

If it was at a competitive price when put on the market, it might've had a chance.

Way too expensive and the lack of infrastructure is hurting sales.

They entered the market too late. All the suckers- I mean consumers- with more money than common sense already bought a Prius, Civic or other hybrid.

The Volt was introduced as a high-priced vehicle during the worst slump in auto sales in decades. It has since been eclipsed by new offerings from GM and other manufacturers so now it is perceived as outdated merchandise. It got excellent reviews at the time and if its technology were introduced in other vehicles across the GM line, they would be big sellers. The Volt itself may be dead or dying, but its spirit will live on.

Toyota introduced the Prius as an alternative to current technology. Chevrolet introduced the Volt virtually on the order of Barack Obama. As was taught more than 50 years ago with the failure of the Edsel, people buy cars that they like, not cars they feel obliged to buy.

There are many comments that need further information. How many vehicles have been sold to GE for use by GE and not for leasing to the public and how many vehicles have been sold to government agencies at all levels. What are the real selling prices, rebates and tax credits?

Its only one model, when other like Toyota and Ford have a range of sizes and models and prices. It expect the sales figures will change once the Volt with the updated more efficient gas engine, the Cadillac version, and all the other ones in the works hit the ground, like the Spark EV.

In the meantime, check out the growth of the entire class of not-liquid-fuel-only vehicles sold...

$50k Chevy v $25k Ford or Toyota. Easy decision. And the Chevy interior looks like something that GM designed in the 1980s

How long can you write about the Volt? It will sink or swim based on consumer interest.

There is a place for electric cars. We just don't have battery technology to make them practical. Hence, the hybrids. You run a small engine and use the batteries to provide acceleration when needed. Now, I hear of an Australian company that is putting the electric motors in each of the four wheels. This eliminates the need for transmissions and differentials and gives you true 4 wheel drive. This is an idea who's time has come! Bring it on!
