Spain calls it the “tariff deficit,” a massive debt that accumulated over the past decade as the cost of running the country’s electrical system exceeded the revenues generated by sales of power.

In May, the tariff deficit reached a whopping $34 billion.

What drove this deficit?

Overly generous renewable energy subsidies are at least partially to blame.

In 2007, Spain paid a premium of $556 per megawatt-hour for electricity that rooftop solar panels supplied to the electric grid, compared with an average $52 paid to competing coal- or gas-fired power plants. By 2012, a whopping $10.6 billion in subsidies were paid out to the renewable energy industry, rising by about 20% from the previous year, and covering more than one third of all electricity generated in Spain.

That is the problem!

Nobody really thought out the downfalls of government subsidies and mandates.

What we are seeing here is the result of lifelong politicians who don't have any business sense making economic decisions that affect multiple industries such as banking, etc. The problem with socialism is that it denies the free market realities of the marketplace by forcing change through legislation; with devastating results for all involved. This is what is going to happen to us here in the U.S. if we continue to elect politicians like Obama who promise us everything but deliver on very little.

"Hydrogen will be the future energy source, "

Do you see any hydrogen mines?

The sun sends down more power than we need, and we just need to figure out how to use it.

The government stepped into the market and guaranteed above market rates for solar generated electricity. Meanwhile, the traditional electric providers had to be a backup for the solar operators and provide energy when the solar was not available. This seems much like what we are seeing in some parts of this country. Perhaps those in Congress and the state regulators should take notice.

The only difference between Spain and the US is that we have our own printing press and everyone still accepts our dollars.

You can't get something for nothing....in general if you have to subsidize something then it can't function on its own and it needs to go away or made more efficient/affordable...

Too much is never enough for the socialist. Now even power companies are getting worried that all that solar power will eat into their earnings.

Any electrical energy production industry that must have subsidies to even be remotely competitive is an industry whose time has not come and this applies to the solar and wind industries anywhere in the world today. Solar and wind electricity generation using the technology we have currently is simply not cost competitive and requires taxpayer subsidies to be able to offer electricity that is even remotely near the cost of fossil fuel and nuclear produced electricity.

Spain will suffer terribly due to the blind faith that solar had arrived as a viable electric power generation source and Germany is following close behind. Keep watching folks as what will happen in Europe due to the dominance of the Green Parties in several European countries forcing solar and wind electricity production fails from an economic standpoint.

The question that should haunt the citizens of the US and Canada is will we follow the failing Green Party policies now in force in Europe.

Spain is not the first European country to find out that "Solar" is not the magic alternate to using petroleum/carbon based fuels and that it turns out to be far more expensive than originally lauded to be.

Solar is an energy source that has it's place but will never be the end all to be all. Hydrogen will be the future energy source, too bad it won't be the near future.

Ouch! A huge "money pit"

An excellent example of politics overriding economics. Always a bad idea. While solar is and will be the dominate future of energy production, the knucklehead politicians don't realise that we are living in the present and not the future. And who the heck knows when the future where solar is main affordable energy source??? 20 years? 50 years? 100 years? It will happen, but not because of politicians.

Germany is finding out the same thing. High renewable energy subsidies and in particular, solar energy is driving up electricity cost to the point manufacturing is leaving Germany. But of course the N Am liberal left wingnuts won't learn a thing.

Spain is bankrupt and socialist policies took it there like Greece. We are headed in the same direction. Wake-up before it's to late. We have maybe two years before the our Conny blows up and there will be no recovery, no job and paper money that is worthless.

U.S. taxpayers take note, quote, "Overly generous renewable energy subsidies are at least partially to blame." Can this rear its ugly head in the States? Will history repeat itself or will the U.S. learn from what happened in Spain.
