The QC government says it can jump to the front of the line of the MM&A creditors seeking Ms, to compensate the Lac-Mégantic derailment victims and cover its cleanup bill. But legal experts aren’t so sure

QC is counting on the environmental provisions of the federal Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act to get repaid. However, that recourse may not be as far-reaching as the government suggested

This would be a nasty surprise for Quebeckers

The minister responsible for the E Townships played down that promise, but nonetheless asserted once more that QC will become a secured creditor in MM&A’s Canadian bankruptcy

But that is “not a slam-dunk case,”
The government can only claim a privileged status on the land and property where the environmental disaster occurred

It seems that politics is creeping into the courtroom from the judge's comments.

Quebec, in trying to find all the deep pockets it can, is suing MM&A, the oil companies that provided the crude oil, and CP Rail for originating the shipment. Yet we still do not have a report with a definitive cause of the disaster. Questions have arisen about the chemical makeup of the crude, the condition of the brakes on the cars and the locomotives before and after the wreck, the number of brakes set, the locomotive fire, the silent train (no reported brake noise) rolling downhill, the cause of the initial explosions, and many other issues. I expect the complete investigation will not be completed this year as so many items are checked, analyzed, and rechecked.

There will be some changes to insurance held by business thanks to this development. Once again the big, bad American screws their northern neighbour.

"Why should the people pay for this?"

Well, who should pay?
The railroad? It's made up of people.
The government? It's made up of people.
The oil company? It's made up of people.

We live in a closed system. Everything that we do affects everything and everyone else.
The pension that your grandmother lives off of is probably funded, in part, by profits from the oil company that you would like to pin this whole thing on.

What's the answer?
Pray for them.
