Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW)’s rechargeable i8 sports car is entering a soon-to-be-crowded field of supercars with a hint of green. While they tap into Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA)’s popularity, they’re for different buyers.

BMW will show a production version of the plug-in hybrid i8 coupe at the Frankfurt auto show next month that’s to go on sale in the U.S. in early 2014. Pricing, also to be announced next month, will be less than $150,000, Willisch said. Model S starts at about $70,000.

Hmmm...Pricing, also to be announced next month, will be less than $150,000, Willisch said. Model S starts at about $70,000.

The system delivers a combined 362 horsepower to speed the car from 0 to 62 miles (100 kilometers) per hour in just 4.5 seconds, while delivering an average of 94 miles per gallon, BMW said.

The model S does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds.

The i8 differs from Model S in that it is fundamentally a performance-oriented car, said Hendrik Wenders, product manager for the model.
So I can pay two and a half times the cost for the slower car and still have to buy premium gas?

More cars to shift the carbon footprint from the engine to the power generating plant putting an even greater load on our aging power grid. Way to go.

The i8 is basically a hybrid using "electric power for the front wheels and a three-cylinder gasoline engine for the rear tires."

I'm glad to hear that it isn't so much a competitor for Tesla's Model S but it sounds like it could be a bit of a competitor for Tesla's roadster.

But it is also interesting to read that (unlike some gasbuddy posters) the BMW CEO considers Hybrids and electric cars to be the car of the future.

“This is the supercar of the future: It has the driving performance of an M3, but gets more than 80 miles per gallon,” Ludwig Willisch, BMW’s North American chief executive officer." ...

"The success of Palo Alto, California-based Tesla’s Model S “absolutely” convinces Munich-based BMW there’s a market for premium rechargeable vehicles, Willisch said."- From the article

These companies making the high priced Electric Vehicles will have to get a good market share to break even. At this time there are not enough buyers for EV's to fill the slot. Whenever a new EV hits the bricks some of the public has to be the first and buys them up. It happened with the volt and they had to cut their price by 5 grand this year to try and get a dead sales to resurrect.

Oh, I have to laugh a bit, just a bit, at this. Tesla temporarily stopped selling the roadster in North American because the subcontract with Lotus, which was number limited as far as body shells, ended. People outside North America can still get a roadster, maybe. BUT, a Tesla roadster will be back on the market in another year or two. Model S is selling well, and the Model X will be out soon, and two other "Teslas" are currently selling and providing Beta testing for other Tesla models like the CUV and smaller cheaper car coming along in a year or so.

Don't believe in Tesla? Well, what is fundamentally different about Tesla from Fisker or any other company is that Tesla owns all its own technology--and can licence it for other income in the meantime.
1) Toyota RAV-4 EV is actually a Tesla power train underneath. (Toyota purchased a small stake in Tesla to get access)
2) Smart EV is actually a Tesla power train underneath. (M-B purchased a small stake in Tesla to get access)

Well, now that Tesla has upped their game by on-the-fly changing the 80kW Supercharger stations to 120kW which means that a 20 minute stop gives you not a half charge, but a two-thirds charge and for FREE forever, having a worthy competitor like BMW will make this a rip snorting dash.
