DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Regular unleaded gasoline is disappearing rapidly from North Dakota stations, and not everyone is happy about it.

The Dickinson Press reports that North Dakota service stations are moving away from offering 87 octane gasoline that does not contain ethanol. That's in response to a federal renewable fuel standard.

Mike Staudinger, general manager of DJ's Tesoro station in Dickinson, says his station made the switch last week. He says there's been little response from customers so far.

North Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association President Mike Rud says his group is not happy about the change. He says there's still a big demand for regular gasoline without ethanol, and people with older vehicles cannot use ethanol blends.

ASTM D 4814, an industry standard followed by fuel and vehicle producers, defines the areas of the country where "regular" gas may be 85 AKI. In those areas, which are typically at higher altitudes, a lower AKI is appropriate. However, some vehicles require 87 AKI at all altitudes. My 2012 Ford Escape is one of these vehicles.

Get the government out of the gasoline business. EPA regulates are a political joke, not based on any scientific standard.

Strange - you'd think that the people in ND, since they're in a big agricultural state on the Plains, would be mostly for ethanol like their colleagues in Iowa. I guess oil and old cars win out there, though.

The people want ethanol-free gasoline, but that just shows progressive politicians that we're too stupid to make the politically correct decisions, so they must make them for us.

While Milwaukee, California, Japan will eventually catch up with the same technology that is purportedly used in most automobile manufacturers of current models of automobiles, it is going to take some time for the motorcycle industry and the small engine (lawn, off road) industry to get their end right.
Parts that aren't covered by warranty in earlier vehicles utilizing E10 arre beginning to show up.
When the switch comes to E15, it's going to get worse.

Regular is selling in many northwestern states as 85 octane and you must pay 10-15 cents more a gallon for 87 octane. I think this is just a ripoff by the sellers to make you buy the higher priced gas. The price of regular, mid grade and premium used to be about 2-3 cents a gallon spread now it is about 30-40 cents a gallon for regular vs premium, another rip off.

We haven't had Ethanol Free gas in the Philly Area for years. But I agree, the reasons for E10 are crap but someone had to make up for all the farmer handouts Congress took away. What we need to do is stop electing these fools to Congress. We spend so much time worrying about who is President we don't care who we vote into the Senate or Congress when in reality it is those idiots who actually control the budget and taxes.

Where's the "PRO-CHOICE" crowd now?! Send that no-E stuff here. Makes NO sense to use 10% ethanol and get 10% - 15% lower mpg! Who's the flippin genius who came up with this nonsense?!

It was hard to find here, until a local station started carrying it. It costs more, but I do use it occasionally.

If people are so ignorant that they do not notice poison being put into their cars then it is easy for the government to slip not only that but other things to them and tell them it is good for them. These people for the most part just cruise along with the breeze. Wait until some of them get smart enough to start doing a little simple math and find out what Ethanol is really costing them in dollars. They may some day even figure out that the government is taking over and telling them what is good for them and they will not care. When this type of person wakes up it is usually too late.
