An EPA staff report suggests methane from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, contaminated wells near Dimock, Pa., but the agency says the water's safe to drink.

WASHINGTON — One year ago, the Environmental Protection Agency finished testing drinking water in Dimock, Pa., after years of complaints by residents who suspected that nearby natural gas production had fouled their wells. The EPA said that for nearly all the 64 homes whose wells it sampled, the water was safe to drink.

Yet as the regulator moved to close its investigation, the staff at the mid-Atlantic EPA office in Philadelphia, which had been sampling the Dimock water, argued for continuing the assessment.

In an internal EPA PowerPoint presentation obtained by the Tribune/Los Angeles Times Washington Bureau, staff members war

"We are not going to agree on this discussion."

True, when one refuses to follow the scientific findings and geologic realities, it's impossible to find agreement.

C'mon drpepper, I know you must be a very happy guy with all that laughing gas you must be sniffing1 (no pun intended; well maybe!)
Far too much methane is escaping into the upper atmosphere; and the horizontal fracking, which in contrast to the vertical fracking has only been around since the late 1990's.
We are not going to agree on this discussion.
Your assertions on that strengths in the unity of States as individual entities goes against reality. One large organization is stronger then a loose alignment of individual states with their own goals/agendas. If your logic was to hold any credence then there would be no United States military as a centralized command structure etc.
If America does not support itself as a country but rather supports individual fiefdoms or states then the strength within that unity will begin to deteriorate and eventually cease to exist as a single and united country.
This has been a very quick response as I have retn'd to work as opposed to retirement and no longer have the luxury of engaging in extended dialogues.
Americas power is in its unity, the UNITED STATES; not a loose gaggle of states with their own agendas! I firmly believe the EPA and other national organizations really do care for its nations citizens. It's too bad that too many individuals are chastened with and by rhetoric and false beliefs of that very nation that has nurtured them for so long.

Let all you naysayers take the first drink. If the aquifers and ground water supplies get fouled by fracking by-products, the outrageous price at the pumps we now pay will pale next to what we will pay for water and there will be no recourse forever after.

Sorry CdnLynx, your theory holds no water, pun intended.

If fissures were present the methane would not have been contained for millennia to be tapped by drilling. And if you think that fracced fissures are long enough to go through a mile or more of the rock that has contained that methane for millennia you are greatly mistaken. You see, fracced fissures have been studied quite heavily, with most no more than 150' in length.

As for the US EPA, their agenda has changed from the original intent. A great example of what our founders tried to keep from happening by giving too much power to a Federal entity. That is why the US is made up of individual states, united based on freedom and states rights, not federal rights.

It's far better to have a national entity that looks out for the entire country, as opposed to smaller state fiefdoms that are not cohesive, or in other words, for others that can comprehend, fractured entities. Smaller state entities are far more easily, coerced, manipulated and subsequently corrupted! This is what some here count on!
Nothing is perfect, however in the case of the EPA, there is more smear and rhetoric.

drpepper, you disappoint me, you know very well methane is a lighter then air gas which rises up through fissures as opposed to liquids that will settle.

teenitup - It's not hard to find, just got to know how to look!!

LOL, 'environmentalists' daunting their savior EPA!

I'll ask again, if methane is migrating from the frac zone how is it possible that no brine or frac fluids have not done the same??? Recent scientific study using tracers has proven that this has not happened.

This is a problem that if we continue with fracking and get it wrong we are screwed. Better to take the time and get it right.
